Christopher Newport Cross

Bronze cross on river rock base memorializes May 24, 1607, arrival at Falls of the James by Christopher Newport, John Smith, and others recently arrived at Jamestown to establish what became the first permanent English settlement in North America. The fall line is the boundary between the navigable and non-navigable portions of the James River, which drops over 100 feet as it passes from west to east through present-day Richmond. Dedicated in 1907 on nearby Gamble's Hill, the monument was moved to its site by the canal in 1983.
