Seattle-Vancouver 2017 - flew to Seattle with Carol & Isabella July 26, Amtrak to Vancouver July 28 early am, return to Seattle July 30 late pm, flew home August 4; Seattle highlights included Space Needle, Mt Rainier NP, & ferry to Whidbey Island; Monday in Seattle, took Theo Chocolate Factory tour & visited Ballard (or Hiram M Chittenden) locks & Carl S English Botanical Garden; Ballard/Chittenden locks join Shishole Bay on Puget Sound to Salmon Bay and, through Fremont Cut or Canal, to Lake Union & Lake Washington, with botanical garden on N side of locks; built 1911-16, officially opened 1917; smaller lock is 30 x 150, larger is 80 x 825; dam with 6 gates to maintain level of lakes 20.6 ft above mean low tide of Puget Sound, deepend Salmon Bay allows salt water to settle & pipe returns it to W side of locks, to keep fresh & salt water areas separated; salmon ladder allows salmon to go between lakes & sound; Chittenden Locks & Lake Washington Ship Canal added to National Register of Historic Places 1978 (78002751), also on American Society of Civil Engineers Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks register; boats on Salmon Bay marina, E of dam
