March 28-30, 2017, to North Carolina’s Outer Banks trip with Clyde Cornett. We went to Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse in Manteo twice — the evening of the 28th, at dusk, and for sunrise on the 30th. Interesting clouds and the pier/boardwalk lights that came on about 7:35 made nice evening conditions, but the cloudless skies at sunrise (welcome for our earlier stop at Bodie Island Light for Milky Way photos) made for a disappointing sunrise. Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse (2004 replica of 1877 structure) is fourth to bear Roanoke Marshes name; three screwpile lighthouses in Croatan Sound, southwest of Roanoke Island, had been built in 1831, 1858, and 1877; the last was decommissioned in 1955, and Manteo considered buying it to place on its waterfront, but the lighthouse was sold to another buyer, and then was lost in a storm (info from Lighthouse Friends site).
