Red barn in Lancaster Court House Historic District, National Register of Historic Places 1983 (83003286); Virginia Historic Landmarks (3rd ed, p 230): "The tiny community of Lancaster Court House is one of the best preserved of Virginia's rural courthouse villages." Includes Clerk's Office (1797, enlarged 1834, used as clerk's office until 1937); jail 1819-23, used as jail until 1938); Lancaster House (1828, with several later additions), which served for a time as an ordinary; old courthouse site (1742 courthouse building, when county seat moved to Lancaster CH from Queenstown, was W of Clerk's Office - used 1742-1861, when "new" courthouse opened); courthouse green, S of old CH and jail, W of Lancaster House); Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library includes these buildings plus the Steuart Blakemore building (c 1900), formerly the post office, across the street; Historic District also includes 1861 courthouse; barn on E side of old courthouse green
